When I was thinking up rough ideas for doing Period Princesses, Belle was easy.
Art lovers will immediately recognise this. I based this portrait on the famous painting of Madame de Pompadour by Francois Boucher. Considering that 'Reinette' Poisson became the most famous of Louis XV's mistresses for her beauty, wisdom, diplomacy, intelligence and mastery of all the fine arts.... come on, how is that NOT our Belle, huh? We've never seen her actually MARRY her beastly prince yet, have we? ^_- The first definitive tale of Beauty and the Beast was published in 1740, when Pompadour would have been about 20, which makes this a perfect period match for Belle.
